The Putatara is a Conch shell trumpet. These instruments were used for signalling and a variety of ceremonial uses.
Maori legend has it that when Tane descended from the heavens carrying the 3 baskets of knowledge gifted from his father Rangi, he left behind a Putatara as a koha (gift).
The two main components are shell and wood. The shell represents Tangaroa (God of the ocean) and the wood, Tane Mahuta (God of the forest).
Putatara form an important part of Maori practises and beliefs.
This Putatara was hand-carved and painted by Master Carver Apera “Red” Haua in Rotorua, New Zealand".
This particular Putatara is made from the rarer Spider Shell Conch. These interesting and distinctive-looking large marine gastropods are members of the genus Lambis (Spider Conchs) of the family Strombidae and are found exclusively in the Indo-Pacific region.
