Brent Wong was born in Otaki in 1945. He spent the earlier part of his life in Wellington, where at the age of sixteen he started painting, beginning with experiments in color and abstract forms based on European models. Later, working in the studio from imagined and remembered imagery, he developed the representational/symbolic style of work for which he has become very well known. Brent's paintings have been exhibited successfully over the years at galleries in New Zealand and abroad. His works are to be found in a wide range of public and private collections and his work features in an extensive number of articles and books. As recently as May 2003 Prime Minister Helen Clark presented Brent's Light study with cloud and dunes No 1 (1970) to the people of Tauranga. It had previously been on display in Manila. That the images Brent has produced have significantly influenced a whole generation of New Zealanders is movingly conveyed in the following quote from Peter Jackson of "Lord of the Rings' fame, writing about his search for Middle Earth sites: "This photo (referred to) looks like it’s been touched up to look like a painting. I grew up with Brent Wong paintings that looked like this, and I used to think that was his style that made the landscape look that way. Now I know that he was painting exactly what he saw" (TheOneRing.net). The images listed are all prints.
